Rasheda’s service charges are up. Can she increase her tenant’s rent?
“I’ve heard that service charges may go up next year.
Now, I want to charge a fair price. Can I increase my tenants’ rent
in the middle of their tenancy contract?”
Legal consultant, Ahmed Odeh:
“It does make a lot of sense to increase the rent to reflect the increase in service charges.
However, you are not allowed to increase the rent during the course of the tenancy. The best thing to do is to send a written
notice to the tenant, at least ninety days prior to the expiry of the lease, informing him of the increase.
This is provided that the rent increase is in line with the rental increase calculator, as prescribed by RERA.”
