We often watch films for their storyline or even the stars in it. Sometimes we even watch them as means to escape from our everyday lives.
But, some of us watch films for something else, passion for cars. Today, however, we are going to talk about some iconic cars from some iconic films. And without any further delays, here they are!
James Bond (1963 – current)
James Bond is the greatest spy who ever lived, Period. The film series has been a home to many gorgeous and some ridiculous cars over the years.
The one we will be focusing on today is the gorgeous 1964 Aston Martin DB5, once dubbed “the most famous car in the world.”
It is a 5 speed manual with a 4 liter straight six engine that produces 282 bhp, does 0-100 km/h in 7.1 seconds with a top speed of 225 km/h.
Herbie – The Love Bug (1963 – 2005)
One of Disney’s first movies starring a racing car named Herbie back in 1968 and was featured in several movies. Herbie was a pearl white 1963 Volkswagen racing Beetle, full of life, joy, and love. Underneath all that cuteness is a 1.2L engine producing 40 horsepowers… Cute.
Fun fact: Herbie’s number 53 came from a Disney director or producer, that liked retired baseball pitching star, Don Drysdale of the Los Angeles Dodgers. 53 was Don Drysdale’s uniform number.
Imagine superstars such as Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, and Sean Ben in one movie, and to make it even more interesting, adding what could possibly be the greatest car chase in the history of film! Well, that movie already exists and it’s called Ronin.
Car wise, the star of the film is the 1996 Audi S8, a 4.2 liter V-8, boosting 335 horsepower (which might sound pitiful but remember it’s a 20 year’s old car!). It was requested by the Larry (Skip Sudduth), the driving expert in the movie when he said “Something very fast. Audi S8. Something that can shove a little bit. I’m also gonna need a nitrous system.”
Gone in 60 seconds (2000)
Gone is 60 seconds is another car heist movie with starring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie as well as many amazing cars, but we can all agree that the real star of that movie was a mythical creature by the name of Eleanor, a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500.
1967 was the first model to have the GT500 badge. This adult sports car is equipped with a 7.0L V8 that allows it to hit top speed over 240 km/h
Eleanor was sold in 2013 for an astonishing $1.1 million (about AED 40 million).
The Transporter (2002)
The transporter is an action thriller starring Jason Statham and the 1999 BMW 735i.
It is a V8 with 235 bhp that could do 0-100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and had a top speed of 243 km/h. It came with a 5-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic manual shift mode. Wait that doesn’t make sense, the BMW in the film had a manual gear!
A little-known fact is that the car actually being driven in the film was the BMW 750iL (European specs) which had a stock 322 bhp V12 engine and was fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission by BMW to allow for more “action” during the chase sequences.
The Italian Job (2003)
The Italian Job is a heist film that was remade in 2003, starring Mark Wahlberg in the leading role. It’s full of clever plans and unique ways of committing the robberies. The Mini Cooper S really took off thanks to this film.
Although the cars in the film were heavily modified to be able to carry a large amount of weight, the John Cooper Works or JCW edition is quite the car. It was also the first model of the new generation of Mini’s still being produced.
The car in question, the 2003 Mini Cooper S, has a supercharged 1.6 liter, 4 cylinder engine that produces 163 bhp, does 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and has a top speed of 213km/h.
The Fast and the furious (2001 – current)
A global franchise, released in 2001. To be a character from this film & drive the cars they drove was every teenager’s dream! This film had several superstar cars in it, but we are gonna focus on one beast, and by that we mean the 1970 Dodge Charger R/T.
The 1970 Dodge Charger R/T is basically a monster, it was too powerful for its own good. It was featured in multiple Fast and Furious movies driven by Vin Diesel. 1970 was the last year of the 2nd generation with 7.0L V8 Hemi 4-speed that generates a top speed of 220km/h.
